Rose water is a natural and aromatic liquid obtained through the steam distillation of the leaves of special rose varieties such as Rosa damascena (Isparta rose). Although it is obtained as a by-product of rose oil production, it is a valuable and versatile product in its own right. With its light, pleasant scent and skin-friendly properties, it has gained an important place in both traditional and modern uses.

1. Production Process

Rose water is obtained by collecting the concentrated aromatic water formed as a result of distilling rose petals with steam. The steam produced during distillation is first condensed; the separated volatile oil (rose oil) remains at the top, while the aromatic water at the bottom is rose water. High-quality rose water is pure and unadulterated, with no chemicals added.

2. Chemical Composition and Properties

Rose water naturally contains a small amount of rose oil. This gives it both its pleasant scent and its soothing and moisturizing properties. It contains natural aromatic components such as:

Geraniol

Citronellol

Eugenol

Linalool

Thanks to these components, rose water exhibits antiseptic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties.

3. Uses

a. Skin Care:

Used as a toner, it tightens pores.

It has a soothing effect on skin redness, irritation, and acne.

It provides refreshing natural care for skin after makeup or sun exposure.

b. Food Industry:

It is used as a natural flavoring agent in desserts (lokum, sütlaç, güllaç, etc.) in Middle Eastern and South Asian cuisines.

It is a key ingredient in traditional products such as rose syrup and rose jam.

c. Religious and Cultural Uses:

Since the Ottoman period, it has been used in mosques, tombs, and religious ceremonies for cleaning and hospitality purposes.

It has been one of the traditional fragrant treats offered to guests.

d. Aromatherapy and Reflexology:

It is used in massage therapies, steam baths, and stress-reducing applications for its psychological relaxing effect.

4. Storage and Quality

Rose water should be stored in light-proof bottles and in a cool environment. Natural products have a limited shelf life; pure rose waters without additives should generally be consumed within 6–12 months of the production date.
